A
Brief Introduction |
| |
|
| |
The Chinese Society of Urban Development is a national, public organization
that conducts research in issues dealing with urban reform and development,
opening to the outside world, as well as construction and management of
cities. The society was set up in December 1984 under the sponsorship of
the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
The main task of the society are is to conduct comprehensive research
in theoretical and practical issues of urban reform and development. As
well, the society aims to promote the exchanges of information and cooperation
in economic and cultural fields, both among Chinese cities themselves
and between Chinese and foreign cities.
Since its establishment, the society has carried out a considerable number
of activities, popular in many cities. It has also made a significant
contribution to current developments in urbanization and modernization.
It has strengthened ties and exchanges between city industrialists, officials,
experts, as well as noted scholars. Therefore, a joint venture in research
is made possible on issues such as construction and management during
urban reform.
As well, the society has developed friendly exchanges both among cities
within China and between Chinese and foreign cities, providing to each
city valuable experiences from others.
At present, mayors of 430 cities are members of the Council of the Society.
There are also numerous specially-invited members, including department
leaders from the State Council as well as well-known experts, scholars,
social activists, and noted entrepreneurs. These members become the backbone
of the society, conducting various activities and playing an important
role for successfully accomplishing various tasks of the society.
The China Cities International Travel Service (National Category A Travel
Service), approved by the National Tourism Administration of China and
run by the Society together with the cities involved, was established
in 1994, aiming to promote and develop tourism as well as enhance the
exchange and cooperation among cities (both nationally and internationally).
The Society of Urban Development wishes to make a concerted effort to
cooperate with its friends from all over the world to speed up the urbanization
and modernization process of Chinese cities and to promote the exchange
between China and the outside world.
